How to Control Welding Distortion by Calculating Joules per Inch

In this episode of TIG Time, Wyatt addresses the age old question, “How do I get rid of distortion when TIG welding”? Well the fact is, you will never get rid of it completely, but there are a few things you can do to figure out why you are getting it. And once you understand the characteristics causing your distortion, you will be better able to CONTROL it.


The Formula:

Joules per Inch = (Volts x AMPS x 60) / Inches per Minute

The Welding:

Wyatt demonstrates how to use Joules per Inch to figure out whether your weld will have large amounts of distortion or not. Wyatt makes two welds; with the only variable being the travel speed (or inches per minute). Notice the difference in the weld size and heat affected zone between the two welds.
