If you have to weld two pieces of metal together, it is almost guaranteed that it can be done with the TIG welding process. The difficulty comes in when the welder has to determine the best way of going about that weld. In TIG welding there are countless accessories, equipment and other factors that go into getting good results. However, at the end of the day, if you're technique is not up to snuff, all the accessories and gear isn't going to mean a thing.

In this video, we go over the dab method. This technique is one that is used almost exclusively in aerospace and other industries that require precision welds.

Here are some quick tips for getting good results with the dab method:

1. Dab the filler at the base of the puddle
2. Establish a rhythm to your dabs
3. Keep your filler metal in the shielding gas
4. Maintain a constant travel speed
5. Add an extra bad at the end of your weld

There are so many times when I have needed to weld multiple pieces of one widget or another. Sometimes we just have to suck it up and do the long and tedious process of welding them by hand. Then there are other times, where it is so easy to just create a fixture or system, like we did in this video, with off the shelf items that can speed up your productivity and give you perfect welds, every time.

In this video, we show you how easy it is to make a long, tedious task a little more manageable!

TIG Welding Technique: Lay Wire

Feb 2016 26

Written by Mr. TIG (Wyatt Swaim)

The "Lay Wire" Technique is a method of adding filler material when TIG welding that is often mis-used and can be a controversial topic when talking to many welders. This technique is often used to get cool looking welds, or achieve a look of welding often referred to as #weldporn.

The problem with the Lay wore method is, while looking very good, it can also lead to a variety of problems with the welds structure, size and penetration. If this video, we will show you some reasons why you may consider using this technique, why you would favor other techniques (like the dab technique) over this method and we will even demonstrate how to perform lay wire welding.
