Today we are closing out the welding defects/discontinuities series and covering the remaining 2 defects. The first one we discuss is unequal leg length. This is pretty simple defect to fix. Improper leg length is more than likely caused by improper work angle.

So for the longest time, I have heard about these ridiculous sized welding rods that are the size of baseball bats. It's always been on my bucket list to give one of these things a go.We were planning on visiting our good friends at WeldTube on our way back from the Good of the Land Fest in Temple Texas and they asked if we wanted to shoot a video using one of these rods.

Back gouging is one of many ways to perform a complete joint penetration weld, also referred to as a full pen weld. In this application, two plates are welded from one side, there is usually no gap between the plates, and a backing strip is not needed.

The horizontal stick test is a very common test for most welders getting into structural welding. The fit up is different than the flat, vertical, and overhead in that only one of the plates are beveled for the horizontal test.

The AWS D1.1 Structural Steel Code book has a plethora of prequalified welding processes and joint designations, making it, in my opinion, the most useful code book to teach the various processes of welding.
